Manaslu Trek

A truly unique experience
Trekking around Manaslu is a truly unique experience, giving you an opportunity to visit a relatively “untouched” region in Nepal. This region sees few trekkers, which helps maintain it’s more exclusive and unspoiled terrain. Manaslu trekking provides spectacular beauty along the border of Nepal and Tibet, allowing trekkers to venture around its magnificent circuit.
Manaslu has a unique environment, rich in bio diversity that has made this region one of the finest tourist destinations of Nepal. The majestic Himalayan ranges in the area consist of cultural diversities and natural scenery with high altitude glacier lakes and captivating flora and fauna, all of which making this a must do trip in one of the most beautiful places of Nepal.

Nepal is home to 8 of the highest mountains in the world. There are 14 mountains in the world above 8,000m/ 26,246 feet. Manaslu is one of these mountains. We have treks in the Makalu region to Mera peak. We trek to Everest, we trek around Kangchenjunga, around Annapurna and into Annapurna Base Camp. The Manaslu trek really is remote, unique and away from the busy trekking regions.

Daily Distances

Day 1

Arrive in Kathmandu. You will be picked up at the airport and brought to our hotel for the night. A briefing will take place at 5:30pm. The hotel is close to all amenities and you can pick up any last minute items. Overnight hotel.

Day 2

Drive to Sati Khola 712m/ 2,336 feet. This is a 6/7 hour drive by private vehicle. Overnight camp.

Day 3

Trek to Machha Khola 883m/ 2,897 feet. You climb up onto a ridge above the huge rapids of the Buri Gandaki, before descending back down and continuing on a steep rocky trail to the Gurung village of Labishe (880m). Beyond you camp at Machha Khola (4 – 5 hours).

Day 4

Trek to Jagat 1,415m/ 4,642 feet. You continue following the course of the Buri Gandaki, climbing and descending many ridges. Eventually the river valley widens and you follow a good trail to Jagat. Overnight camp below the village (5 – 6 hours).

Day 5

Trek to Pewa 1,650m/ 5,413 feet. The trail crosses the river and climbs over a rocky ridge to the settlement of Salleri and then Setibas, where several mani walls indicate you are now entering a region of Tibetan influence. You pass through Philim and continue onwards to camp at Pewa. Overnight camp.

Day 6

Trek to Ghap 2,165m/ 7,103 feet. The valley finally widens and it’s a pleasant walk through bamboo forests to the tiny village of Deng. You have now succeeded in crossing the main Himalayan Range,and the trail follows the Buri Gandaki Valley as it turns from north-south to east-west. This region is known as Kutang and is inhabited primarily by Gurungs who practice Buddhism. You head west up the Buri Gandaki Valley, contouring up and out of the canyon, then drop into the Shringi Khola Valley. More ups and downs eventually bring us to Ghap. Overnight camp.

Day 7

Trek to Sho 2,880m/ 9,449 feet. The trail heads into the woods through fir trees alive with birdlife. In the middle of the forest you cross a wooden bridge spanning the Buri Gandaki, then make a long climb through bamboo and rhododendron forests to Namrung 2,670m/ 8,760 feet. From Namrung you enter the Nupri Region and continue to Sho. Overnight camp.

Day 8

Trek to Samagaon 3,541m/ 11,617 feet. Beyond Sho you get spectacular views of Manaslu, Manaslu North, and Naike Peak at the head of the valley. The trail emerges onto a plateau at Shya 3,530m/ 11,581 feet. From here it crosses a ridge, enters and then exits a side canyon, then descends onto a rock-strewn moraine. You clamber across the boulders to emerge onto a ridge overlooking the extensive pastures and fields of Samagaon 3,541m/ 11,617 feet. Overnight camp.

Day 9

Acclimatization in Samagaon 3,541m/ 11,617 feet. Samagoan is a growing village and a good place to spend two nights. Most teams push on to Samdo today, but you will benefit from additional acclimatization. Overnight camp.

Day 10

Trek to Samdo 3,872m/ 12,703 feet. Revitalized, you descend to the Buri Gandaki and follow the trail to Samdo, which is nestled behind a ridge (3-4 hours). Overnight camp.

Day 11

Acclimatization in Samdo 3,872m/ 12,703 feet. You have another acclimatization day today, before camping at 4,494m/ 14,744 feet tomorrow. There are good options for gaining more altitude above the village, achieving the maxim of “climb high, sleep low”. Overnight camp.

Day 12

Trek to Larkya Phedi 4,494m/ 12,703 feet. You descend on a wide, gentle trail to the river, then begin the climb toward the Larkya La through a huge gorge, then contouring the hillside (5-6 hours). Overnight camp.

Day 13

Cross the Larkya La 5,213m/ 17,103 feet, descend to Bimtang 3,720m/ 12,205 feet. The route to the top of the pass Initially climbs up a ridge, then ends up on top of the moraine at 4,695m/ 15,403 feet. You descend a bit, then make the final steep climb to the pass. The descent follows the top of the moraine then drops steeply and traverses scree slopes (which can be snow-covered). It’s a long descent to Bimtang (about 11 hours). Overnight camp.

Day 14

Trek to Gho 2,568m/ 8,425 feet. You descend through pine and rhododendron forests to Hompuk and down to a fork of the Dudh Khola to Gho (8 hours). Overnight camp.

Day 15

Trek to Dharapani 2,006m/ 6,581 feet. Trek along the riverbank and descend through scrub forests to Dharapani (9 hours). This is the end of the trekking part of the itinerary and you will be heading back to Kathmandu the following day.

Day 16

Drive to Kathmandu. It is a 7/8 hour drive to Kathmandu. Overnight hotel.

Day 17

At Leisure in Kathmandu. A chance to explore the ancient sites of Kathmandu, with its beautiful temples and bustling markets. We will transfer you to the airport for your return flight home.
